City O’City Funds First Citizenship Class

When a former refugee has lived in America for five years, they are eligible to apply for U.S citizenship. There are a number of classes offered around the Denver Metro area, but many people from our community have been waiting for Project Worthmore to host a class. Thanks to Denver restaurant City O’ City, this dream of ours has become a reality!

City O’ City has generously funded our first Citizenship Class and has encouraged their staff to attend as volunteers. The first session began in September and will continue into next spring. It is exciting to see the students learning and becoming more knowledgable about our country and constitution.

Maggie Gourd-Barrett, one of our English Instructors, teaches the Tuesday/Thursday class that has 16 registered students. Maggie does a fantastic job of creating an environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions and discuss their experiences.

When asked why she wants to become a U.S citizen, one student replied, “I wasn’t allowed to be a citizen of my own country. I need to be a citizen somewhere. I need a place where I belong.”

We are so thankful for this new partnership with City O’ City and are excited for these soon to be citizens of our country!
