Finding Purpose in Growing Food

My name is Say Meh and I am 56 years old. This year, I am going to be working at the Project Worthmore garden on Elmira Street, at the Yu Meh Food Bank and also at Delaney Farm. I have been gardening for many years. I used to grow vegetables in Burma, and then in the camp in Thailand. It makes me feel so happy when I am able to go out to the garden.

When I stay at home I feel very unproductive. I’m planning to grow peppers, lettuce, and onions, but I am also planning to grow foods more traditional to Burma. I hope that I can grow cilantro, pumpkin leaves, and long green beans. In Thailand, I used to plant, eat, and sell the vegetables that I grew. It was my livelihood in every way.

I have four children, three girls and one boy. My husband passed away in 2002 when the kids were still young. It was difficult being a single mom. We came to America in July 30, 2009. I live with my three daughters and my son lives in Omaha, Nebraska. I have 6 grandchildren, and they are all boys.

I’m so excited that I have this opportunity to work with Project Worthmore. I think it will bring me, my family, and my community great joy.
